Tokyo - Megacity
Change over time
Tokyo was originally a small fishing village called Edo, where a government was established there in the 17th century (about 400 years ago). The area then started to develop and Edo became the centre of Japan’s military government. In 1868, Edo changes its name to Tokyo, meaning “eastern capital”. Since then the population and size has increased a lot. The population of the metropolitan area of Tokyo has increased by 1.67 million people in the last 35 years, and has increased by 9.59 million people since 1920.
